Which Type Of Body Armor Is Most Effective?

Rigid or composite body armor (ceramic inserts + high-performance fibers) offers the most comprehensive protection, especially against high-velocity rifle rounds and armor-piercing rounds, making it the mainstream choice for military and police operations.

This type of body armor combines the dual mechanisms of "hard materials breaking up bullets" and "soft materials absorbing residual energy," achieving a protection level up to NIJ IV, capable of withstanding 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds, far exceeding the upper limit of Level III A for purely soft body armor. Its core structure typically consists of front and rear ceramic inserts (such as boron carbide or silicon carbide) and a backing plate of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or Kevlar fiber, achieving synergistic protection of "hard against hard, soft against soft."

In contrast:

Soft body armor: Made of multiple layers of Kevlar or UHMWPE non-woven fabric, it is lightweight and highly flexible, suitable for everyday concealment, but only protects against pistol rounds and fragments, and cannot withstand rifle fire.

Metal bulletproof vests, while strong, are heavy, lack flexibility, and are prone to secondary blunt force trauma; they have been largely replaced by ceramic vests.

New material bulletproof vests, such as liquid bulletproof vests (shear-thickening fluid) and nano-bulletproof vests, are still in the experimental or small-scale application stage and have not yet been widely deployed.

Currently, mainstream military and police equipment worldwide uses a "ceramic insert + UHMWPE/aramid" composite structure. Chinese bulletproof vests, leveraging the advantages of the entire industry chain and strict standards (dent ≤25 mm), are 30% lighter and 60% cheaper than European and American products for the same level of protection. They have been exported to more than 30 countries and have become a highly efficient choice proven in actual combat.
