Although the standard shelf life of bulletproof vests can be over 5 years, their actual protective capability is greatly affected by storage, frequency of use, and environment. Regular inspection is key to identifying potential risks.
1. Routine Quick Inspection (Before and After Each Use)
Purpose: To promptly detect obvious damage or abnormalities.
Procedure: Observe the vest for tears, stains, severe wrinkles, or loose seams; Check that the shoulder straps, waist belt, buckles, and other fastening devices are intact and functioning properly; Confirm that the inserts are firmly embedded and not displaced or loose.
2. Quarterly In-Depth Inspection (Every 3 Months)
Basis: Referring to maintenance standards in professional fields such as fire fighting, military, and police, a quarterly inspection can effectively prevent performance degradation.
Procedure: Lay the bulletproof vest flat on a table and thoroughly inspect the contact area between the soft layer and the insert for bulges, delamination, or indentations. Gently run your hand over the surface of the insert to feel for microcracks or loose structure. Check the edges of the bulletproof layer for fiber breakage or delamination.
3. Annual Professional Assessment (Recommended)
Although there is no mandatory national standard requiring annual testing, it is recommended to have the vest sent to a professional institution or to undergo a penetrating imaging examination of the bulletproof layer using X-ray fluoroscopy equipment (such as a digital gastrointestinal machine) annually to detect internal damage invisible to the naked eye.
Especially suitable for long-term users in high-risk positions (such as SWAT teams and war correspondents).
